Bringing Sleep to Ibiza

We at Simba know that when it comes to our health, the importance of sleep is becoming universally recognised. This week, on an island not usually synonymous with rest and recovery, we invite guests to explore the science behind the perfect night’s sleep with our resident panel of Sleep Experts.

Hope Bastine

BSc (Hons), PGCE, HiyDip, RYT, MBCT/MBSR Cert, MSc.

With a background in anatomy, physiology, neuroscience and psychology, leading therapist Hope Bastine is our resident psychologist and mindfulness expert.

Hope trained in Neuroscience and Psychology at Westminster University and began her teaching career in psychology. After five years in education, she went on to earn a Post-Graduate Diploma in Cognitive-Behavioural Hypnotherapy where she discovered how mindfulness can cure insomnia.

She was trained by Jason Crandell and Dr. P Collard in mindfulness meditation and the science and art of yoga. This moved her to incorporate a mind-body approach within a therapeutic setting that is evidence-based. In her transformation approach to psychotherapy, she incorporates positive psychology, yoga and mindfulness concepts into the room. She is also a sleep and trauma recovery specialist.

Hope is currently conducting wellbeing research at King's College London.

The practice of mindfulness has only recently exploded in the West. Developed from Buddhist meditational practice, its benefits have been well-documented, from reducing psychological and physiological symptoms of stress to improving our cognition. In 2013 Massachusetts General Hospital undertook a trial with individuals diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder. Patients assigned to a mindfulness-based stress reduction program saw a significant decrease in their anxiety versus the control group. Mindfulness is also great for giving us a better night’s sleep. An analysis of randomised controlled trials for insomnia found that eight weeks of meditation training significantly improved total waking time and sleep quality in patients with insomnia.

Lily Soutter

An esteemed nutritionist and in-house ‘Eat Well, Sleep Well’ ambassador for Simba, Lily Soutter has seen first-hand how powerful food can be to health.

Her career stemmed from a chronic childhood condition which, with the advice of a nutritionist, she cured by making radical changes to her approach to nutrition. Inspired by this, she decided to train at one of the best universities for a degree in Food and Human Nutrition and was awarded the Sage Faculty for Excellence Scholarship at Newcastle University. Lily then went on to train as a Nutritional Therapist at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition, coaching individuals on how to obtain optimal health.

Lily is a member of the British Association for Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapy, the professional regulating body for Nutritional Therapy and is CNHC registered, the regulating body for complementary therapists.
